BATV Volunteer Production Wins Award of Distinction

Batavia Access Television (BATV) received the Award of Distinction from the Communicator Awards 2012 Video Competition for “Bulldogs Unleashed – The Documentary”. The award-winning video was produced by BATV volunteers and spotlights the Bulldogs Unleashed community art project/fundraiser held in 2011.

With more than 6,000 entries received from across the US and around the world, the Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring creative excellence for communications professionals. BATV’s documentary was submitted in the Film/Video: Charitable/Non-profit category and received the Award of Distinction, which is the equivalent of second place.

“Bulldogs Unleashed – The Documentary” is a 37-minute program collaborated by BATV volunteers, interns, the Batavia Foundation For Educational Excellence, the Batavia Library Foundation and the Batavia Parks Foundation.

“On February 1, 2011, I received an email from Nell Novak, Artist and Sponsor Coordinator of Bulldogs Unleashed,” recalls BATV Station manager Holly Deitchman, “Novak asked if BATV would be interested in taking on the project. After 60 emails and six months of volunteer time, we had a documentary!”

Long-time BATV volunteer Peter Hongisto was the lead editor on the documentary and Novak helped coordinate the interviews and footage to make the project come together. It was a great merging of local talent. The Bulldogs Unleashed documentary would not have been possible without the help of dedicated volunteers.

“BATV strives to serve all not-for-profit organizations in our community,” Deitchman said, “With limited resources, the use of professional and community volunteers is essential. With great volunteer support, a great subject matter, and a passionate community, the pieces came together for an award-winning documentary.”
